Role Overview

GIS360 is looking for a skilled Database Engineer to design, maintain, optimise, secure and support enterprise database environments.

You will work with relational database platforms, data integrations, performance optimisation, backup and recovery, security, monitoring and troubleshooting while supporting business-critical applications and international client environments.

This is a full-time hybrid/on-site role based in Portugal, with collaboration across GIS360 operations in Beja, Lisbon and Porto and occasional client-site activity when required by a project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, configure, maintain and optimise relational database environments.
  • Administer Microsoft SQL Server and other enterprise database platforms.
  • Monitor database performance, availability, capacity and system health.
  • Diagnose and resolve database performance issues through structured investigation and root-cause analysis.
  • Develop and optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, views and other database objects.
  • Perform query tuning, indexing analysis and execution-plan review.
  • Implement and test database backup, restore, recovery and disaster-recovery procedures.
  • Maintain database security, permissions, roles and access controls.
  • Support database upgrades, migrations, patches and version changes.
  • Assist with data-migration, integration and platform-modernisation projects.
  • Monitor database jobs, alerts, replication and scheduled processes.
  • Support high-availability and business-continuity solutions.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, operational procedures and recovery records.
  • Collaborate with application developers, infrastructure engineers, ERP consultants, security teams and client technical teams.
  • Support production environments and participate in incident resolution when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, Database Technologies or a closely related field.
  • At least three years of relevant professional experience in database engineering, administration or enterprise database support.
  • Experience supporting production database environments and business-critical applications.
  • Experience working in enterprise or international client environments.
  • Strong professional English communication skills.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, SQL and T-SQL.
  • Database administration, query optimisation, indexing and execution-plan analysis.
  • Stored procedures, views, functions and relational database design principles.
  • Backup, restore, recovery and disaster-recovery procedures.
  • Database security, permissions, roles and controlled access.
  • Performance monitoring, capacity awareness, data migration and structured troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of high-availability concepts and Windows Server fundamentals.
  • Clear technical documentation and the ability to work responsibly with production data.

Preferred Skills

  • Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL / MariaDB or Oracle Database.
  • SSIS, ETL / ELT processes and data-warehousing concepts.
  • PowerShell, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric or Power BI.
  • Git, CI/CD and database deployment automation.
  • Experience with ERP database environments, including Microsoft Dynamics 365 or SAP-related platforms.
  • Relevant Microsoft database, Azure, Oracle, PostgreSQL or cloud database certification.
